Haus, Wakefield

Haus in Wakefield is a place of relaxing vibe, plant green vibrancy and friendly staff. Add to all that good drinks, food and events and it’s a winning combination.

As the weather started to improve in March, when my partner and his brother were visiting, we took a stroll through Wakefield and went to pass Haus. I was supposed to visit here with a cousin but life came up and we never got around to meeting up so as we passed on by we decided to head on inside.

There were a few people at tables relaxing and possibly doing a little work; It would certainly be a good place for a catch-up or a relaxed work meeting as well. The staff were bright-eyed and friendly and happy to help with speed but also attentiveness.

As we had big food plans for a late lunch we didn’t get any sweet treats or any food but they looked absolutely incredible by the counter. You can also buy plants, plant pots and the odd other little knickknack in there too.

And that’s not all as they do events from painting and pottery sessions, tarot reading and live music as well. It really feels like a great hub for a small-scale social scene and a great alternative to meeting up at the pub. I really have an appreciation for cafes that serve as a hub of a community and it reminds me of a spot I used to love when I lived in Croydon.

For me though the absolute star of the show was the rhubarb and custard matcha. I’m not sure whether they did this as a special for the rhubarb festival back in Wakefield in February or whether they were already making the most of the city’s love of rhubarb (the city is in the heart of the rhubarb triangle). Regardless, this was a delicious drink and it was a perfect blend of the two syrups they use to make this and the matcha was fully incorporated and it was wonderfully chilled as well.

The price point was nothing over the top or out of the unusual, especially for the area, and I would happily grab one again in the future either to eat in and sample some food as well or in a rush to take away. I’ve seen how the food looks and if it tastes as good as it looks then I’m sure it will be delicious (if/when that happens I’ll pop an update below). In the meantime I recommend you at least go down there for a drink and perhaps a social event that takes your fancy; They’ll make you feel right at home!
