I’ve had plantain in the past but never in the chip form before so when I went into the new global store locally to grab some Tropical Sun chicken stock powder and frozen goat I decided to pick up these spicy yellow plantain chips.
They turned out to be a little thicker than I was expecting them to be but mainly based on the image. The thickness of them actually makes sense as they are a similar thickness to a dried banana chip and I can imagine if they tried to take them much thicker they would disintegrate or burn.
The flavour itself was an enjoyable one as well. They started off feeling fairly mild on the spice front and I was a bit disappointed but after a couple more it built up a little bit and turned into a nice warming mouth feel. Calling them spicy does feel like a bit of a stretch to me but there is a chance that I just have a different definition of spicy.
This size bag actually contained more than one portion but the issue is, as is always the case, eating just one portion of something like these is a little tricky and it’s safe to say that I ended up consuming the entire bag and having deep calorie regret.
These are really not low in calories or particularly macro friendly at all but sometimes you just have to take the hit to enjoy something new and I’m pleased I did because these were delicious. I wouldn’t reach for them super frequently but if I’m in the shop again and there isn’t anything else that grabs my fancy I might have to pick up another bag in a different flavour/style!
Have you tried plantain or more specifically plantain chips? What’s your favourite type or flavour pairing?
