Lidl Deluxe Sourdough Pizza

I always want to try new things and wanted to find out whether spending the extra little bit of money was worth it for this Deluxe Lidl pizza and whether I could recommend you spending your hard earned pennies on it too.

Honestly, I’m normally perfectly happy with a cheap and cheerful pizza. Whether that’s the basic range from the chilled section that I throw some of my own toppings on or just one from the freezer section. I do absolutely love fancy pizza out and about from a restaurant with pizza ovens and all that good stuff but for at home throw in the oven pizza is normally pizza.

But maybe I’m wrong. There certainly have been some super cheap ones that just taste and eat like cardboard so maybe I could get that at restaurant feel at home by spending £2.75 on this ham, portobello mushroom and mascarpone sourdough crust pizza.

I’ll give that woodfired sourdough crust the credit it deserves. After cooking this for nine minutes it had a lovely bit of colour on the outside and a little crunch but remained soft, fluffy and bouncy in the middle. Honestly, the crust might have been the best thing about it.

Now, don’t get me wrong, this pizza is not bad. First off, look at the amount of toppings compared to what you sometimes get. However, those topping flavours were not very well balanced at all. On bites with mushroom that was the only flavour and on bites without it ended up being the crust flavour coming through. There was the creamy mouth feels from the mascarpone and cheese but the ham could have done with some smoking to bring it to life and perhaps a fresh herb could have really brought all these flavours together better.

And I think there’s a bigger issue with the ham than the lack of flavour, for me at least. It being in large slices is really annoying. It makes it surprisingly difficult to cut through without taking all of it onto one slice and if you go for the pick it up approach you have to bite and rip pretty hard to leave the rest behind. I get that maybe it makes it look fancier and more loaded with those toppings but it lacks practicality.

Overall, I’d rather just get a cheap ham based pizza from the frozen section and be done with it. Maybe I’ll try a different one that inspires restaurant feels whilst at home soon.
