This is another item that I got in a Spar Too Good To Go bag alongside the Attack A Snak but I had pretty high hopes for this Walls cheese and onion pastry.
I love cheese and onion things and am partial to a pastry or slice like this. You might have seen me reviewing fridge fresh ones from Lidl and frozen slices from Lidl too to know I have an opinion.
Unlike those I wont be comparing this one to Greggs. Not because I don’t think it’s a fair comparison but because I feel that this type of slice or pastry falls into a slightly different category; On the go or petrol station food (I wont tell you how long I sat here for trying to not type gas station there, Americanisms really did sneak into my brain from living there).
I say that because I remember growing up this would be the sort of thing we would grab from a service station on road trips (calling a UK journey a road trip feels a bit funny but a road adventure doesn’t sound fitting) and with that they have some nostalgia for me as something you would grab in a hurry and nom down cold whilst starving.
The cheese flavour was at least fairly obvious but nothing standout or special. The pastry was of decent taste and texture but it was pretty thick and with that it did cause the filling to get a bit lost in everything. And I think if I had a choice between this or a pretty mediocre prepacked cheese sandwich I would probably just opt for the sandwich instead.
Especially when you consider that one of these usually rocks up on the ticket as about £2. You can certainly get average sandwiches for a similar price point but they normally feel a bit more balanced to carb vs filling ratio and with that the filling flavour that might be there doesn’t get lost in the way this filling does with the pastry.
They serve the purpose they need to but they certainly shouldn’t be something you go for at a time of choice and luxury of alternatives.
