This “posh pop” from Breckland Orchard comes in a variety of flavours and one of those includes dandelion & burdock (D&B).
They happily admit this is a 21st Century version of the classic flavours of a D&B but with that feelings that create nostalgia. They also say that because of there being nothing added extra in there it is a bit lighter than traditional ones.
And when I say I have D&B nostalgia I mean sitting in my Great Grandma’s flat and her giving me a glass coca cola bottle that she washed out and filled with a homemade D&B blend. I honestly wish I had the recipe because to this day that was the absolute best D&B I ever had, served at perfect room temperature with a straw poking out the bottle too. And perhaps that *is* nostalgia but it provides a distinct expectation to what D&B should at least roughly be.
The thing about it being lighter is that yes perhaps it is lighter on the ingredients and the traditional “bad” sides to soda but with it there is definitely a sense of lighter taste too. When I have D&B I want that punch of flavour and for it to really coat your mouth but this is a lot more whimsical and fresh to the level that it dissipates incredibly quickly.
This bottle is £1.99 individually in my local farm shop and it won a Great Taste Award in 2022 and it’s probably a combination of these that led to that price. But given the size of the bottle it’s already on the pricy side and honestly for the flavour and mouth feel of it that is just a bit too pricy. I appreciate the desire to modernise things and to keep it around for current and future palettes but when you’re going to do that you need to keep the real essence there.
This just does not feel like D&B and I’d rather get some old fashioned stuff full of all the added bits and bobs for a lower price.
