If you see a cute looking cafe that seems to have a collection of middling to old people sitting inside and it’s before the place starts serving cooked food you expect some solid things from it.
I absolutely adore the tiles of Lucky Days in York and the staff were incredibly friendly as well but that’s where above average ends unfortunately.

The mocha was very possibly the best bit out of the items we purchased that day. I gravitated towards it because it automatically comes with two shots of coffee and I’m the sort of person that likes not only the taste of stronger coffee but also the hyper-focus that more caffeine tends to give me. It was warming, comforting and a good slurp to relax to before the start of a busy day of museums and exploring.
My other half got the croissant and asked for marmalade, which was on the menu options alongside strawberry jam (allergies mean no strawberry), and they did seem a little surprised about that and came out with two jars of marmalade to ask which would be preferred. Maybe don’t have “a choice of strawberry jam or orange marmalade” on the menu if you aren’t actually wanting to offer it. Anyway, that aside the report on the croissant I got was “Lidl croissants are better” and I’m pretty sure you could have got about 10 Lidl croissants for that single one. Oomph.
Meanwhile, I opted for a blueberry scone with some blueberry jam. There was mention of white chocolate being in the scone on the menu but there wasn’t that creamy gooeyness or sweetness from that inside the scone. Unless it was supposed to be through the cream in the other pot and then it didn’t come through that way either. I’ve had some really good scones over the years and despite their dense looking appearance they can remain moist, light and bouncy but this definitely needed the help of the spreads to balance out the slightly dense, heavy and close crumb scone. They also weren’t incredibly loaded with fruit.
A truly disappointing breakfast experience and especially at the price. I can only think in horror about how dry those scones would have become the further on the day went as they sat around for longer.
What’s your favourite type of scone and filling/topping for them? I’m a sucker for cheese scones with chilli jam.
