A while ago I got the What’s Cooking? cheese and onion bakes from the frozen section of Lidl and I’m an occasional repeat purchaser of them but summer hit and I don’t always want them to be hot.
That’s where these Chef Select ones from the fridge section of Lidl come in. They contain a similar amount of filling and I feel like the feelings taste completely the same, especially when you do put these in the oven as well, but there are a few differences and that’s mainly in the pastry.
The pastry of these ones doesn’t stick as tightly to the filling as the frozen ones do when you cook them up and when you do heat these ones up the pastry doesn’t seem to crisp up quite as well. However, when these are cold I prefer them so much more than when you go into Greggs and end up with a cold cheese and onion bake.
Once again, like the frozen ones, these work out cheaper than Greggs with you being able to grab a pack of two for £1.75. The frozen ones come in at £1.39 so these are a middle placing in terms of price but due to overall ease and quality I can’t really complain.
This is probably a very specific me desire but I wish somewhere did an extra mature cheddar and onion based pastry to give it a little bit more oomph. What cheese would you like to see in a pastry/bake like these?
