Not Sour About This Sourdough

I think Jason’s Superb Sprouted Grains Sourdough has finally explained to me what sourdough should be like.

So frequently I find myself having sourdough and it having what feels like a bit of a bicarbonate of soda after taste to it. Not all the time but certainly some of them including ‘fresh’ ones. I’m not sure if that’s just some extra ingredient they throw into them or what but it always made me question if I just didn’t like sourdough.

With this one from Jason’s though there was none of that aftertaste. It was just soft and delightful to eat and worked perfectly with some sausages from the local butchers.

I am sure there are some other rustic bakery made sourdoughs that I would like too but for this to be on the mass-produced shelves in supermarkets it’s safe to say doubts existed in my mind. At full price this loaf comes in at £2.15 which puts it at a higher price than a lot of regular branded bread, especially given there were less than ten slices in here, but cheaper than some from the ‘freshly baked’ sections.

Whilst I wouldn’t get it consistently this is something that would be on my radar if it was on sale or I fancied a bit of a lighter feeling bread that is free of preservatives, additives and yeast where I wasn’t going to be wanted it toasted! You can of course put this bread under the grill (a broiler) and I would do that if I was doing something like avocado on toast with a poached egg as there would be the time to do it amongst preparing everything else and it would make it a more rounded meal. It is not the sort of effort I would go to for just doing some for toast in the morning though!

They do a variety of others as well including a more traditional white sourdough and a malted version. They also do a pretty solid range of other breads as well that I could be tempted to give a try in the future.

If you want to give Jason’s a try you can find them in a lot of supermarkets, especially their larger stores, such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Morrisons. They also do a protein specific range that seems to be exclusive to Tesco at present.
