First Time Trying Tony’s Chocolonely

I don’t know who you are Tony, or if you even exist in the same way as Betty Crocker is a lie, but thank you for some of these chocolate bars.

You might be taking a look thinking £1.49 is expensive for a regular sized chocolate bar but let me stop that thought for you right there. Tony’s can be found in Oxfam and a lot of other places because of their fairtrade status and aims to change the whole ethics around the chocolate industry. This isn’t an expensive chocolate bar but rather the price that comes with fair wages and good ingredients sourced the right way (besides far worse chocolate exists for not much cheaper these days).

If you have ever looked at one of these chocolate bars and wondered why the pieces aren’t even or what is going on with the pattern they use then that’s linked to this reason too. They explain it all fantastically on the FAQ bit of their website and it’s well worth taking a moment to read it all.

They have a few more flavour combo offerings than the ones I picked up but I got these because, for some weird reason, the box of six was noticeably more expensive than had I got four individual ones and these were the only types on offer.

The orange one was probably the most average to me but that’s because I really enjoy orange chocolate to have a huge hit of flavour. This is probably perfect for somebody that enjoys dipping their orange segment into some chocolate to give that little bit of sweetness. It wasn’t at all bad but the flavour profile didn’t match my personal preference.

My favourite was absolutely the dark chocolate and almond one. Almonds are low on the list of nuts that give me a reaction and in such small quantities this was so incredibly worth the nibble. It was so fantastically balanced in terms of texture and flavours and left me wanting more.

I found the texture of the plain milk, the red bar, to not quite have the melt in the mouth feel I want or for it to be on the more crumbly side but more a stick to your mouth sort of feel. I’m not sure if it’s just that I had a bar that had faced the summer heat slightly or if that is just how that one is supposed to be. There are other fairtrade ‘plain’ chocolate bars I might go for before I gravitate towards a Tony’s red one again.

I would certainly consider getting these again in the future, especially the dark and almond one, and giving a few other varieties a go. I do, very occasionally, see these pretty well discounted in the supermarket but if that comes out of the company’s pocket instead of the supermarket I would be reluctant to get them (this can vary on supermarket, product and supplier).

If you have a favourite from this brand do let me know!
