This was the second time I had gone into Bob&Berts in Trinity Walk Wakefield. For the longest time I thought it was mainly a burger place and whilst they do burgers I would say that’s more of a delicious side hustle and not at all their main focus.
The main focus is 100% the customers. They are incredibly friendly and welcoming and from the staff I’ve encountered they all seem passionate about what they do and that reflects in the food quality.
They do have little screens that you can order from but they are more than happy to take your order directly as well but having those certainly helps the lunchtime rush. Although it’s popular enough that it is never really quiet at all. Despite it being so busy it is laid out in a way that does allow you to have more isolated tables and there are some booths as well meaning that sound isn’t jumping all around and you can easily have a chat with those at your table.

One blueberry white chocolate matcha, a can of coke, a slice of rainbow cake, a slice of red velvet cake and two chicken burgers ordered we waited for the drinks and cakes and took those along with our table number to sit down and wait for the burgers and sides to be freshly made up.
The sides were upgraded from the standard fries that come at base price. One became onion rings for an extra £1.50 and another stayed as fries but with curry sauce added on top again for £1.50. I think the curry sauce ones could have just been an extra £1 seen as it is still the same base fries.
I went for the chicken parmesan burger that was the simple usual combination of freshly fried chicken with salad and a sprinkling of parmesan. But this burger was simplicity done well. I took some condiments to the table as a just in case measure but they weren’t needed at all. It was all well seasoned and the chicken was plump and juicy whilst the bread was soft, fresh and fluffy too. All this making for a good hand hold and mouth feel.

Another thing that brings me joy in Bob&Berts is the plates. Whilst they aren’t anything super fancy they brighten things up a little and make the table a more delightful spot to look at. The shape of them also helps for you to put things like a burger next to a cake plate without having to do too much of a juggling act.
The matcha drink I had tasted strongly of matcha. it wasn’t super high grade matcha but it made sense for the price and they added a nice amount of blueberry in there too. It was a bit hard to mix together and instead I had to move my straw up a little as otherwise I just kept getting pure straws of blueberry from the collected layer of it at the bottom. Still, it tasted delightful.
After munching through the burgers it was time to give some of the freshly made cakes a go. They have a decent selection of sweet treats available making this a perfect spot to go if you just want a drink and a little nibble instead of sandwiches or something heavier. It is the sort of spot where if I needed to meet somebody for coffee as part of a work meeting I would suggest we went to. The cakes themselves are incredibly sweet but the portion size is impressive too. Each cake has distinct layers with buttercream in between which is even more important for the rainbow cake to be able to see each colour clearly.
Oh and I have to give a special mention to the music as there were some absolute 2000s throwbacks playing at times. I can’t remember what the music was like the last time I went in to figure if it’s staff choice of music or just the overall vibe but either way certain songs made me smile and cringe at the same time.
Including the side upgrades this came to just under £46 (including taxes and all that jazz) which I think for how good quality the food was, how pleasant the staff are and the general vibe of the place is pretty solid value for money. If you are in the Wakefield, West Yorkshire area I’d certainly suggest adding this to the list of places you take a moment to relax in.
