I tried these Aldi protein crumpets that I got in my Too Good To Go bag so you don’t have to.
These are usually £1.19 for a pack of two. That’s 40p more than a pack of six Warburtons (brand) ones! But, if you’re looking for something high in protein perhaps these could be worth that extra money.
Spoiler alert: They are not. You could give me a pack of six of these for that price and they would still not be worth it.
A normal crumpet; Light, fluffy, full of little holes that your melted butter or jam falls into and they toast up so the edges become golden and crispy whilst the inside remains a pillow.
These crumpets? Well heavy sighs these are fairly thin and there isn’t really a lot of that sort of bubbly feel going on and as such the butter I put on just didn’t seep through. And, when the taste of this is very doughy and it feels fairly dry they need all the help that they can get. I’ve never referred to something as like chewing cardboard before but these make me want to change that.
But worse than that these took six minutes in the toaster and I basically just gave up. The edges weren’t getting crispy or golden and the inside was still just and just warm. A more regular crumpet usually takes my toaster no more than three minutes.
And let us take a moment to discuss that yes these have 22g of protein for two crumpets (making that £1.19 a serving) but they also have a whopping 2.16g of salt in (that’s over 35% of your daily salt allowance). That’s in comparison to having two Warburtons crumpets for just over 1.6g of salt and 6.6g of protein. In fact two Warburtons crumpets also come in at 194 calories. These Aldi High protein ones come in at 342 calories for the two. With all that these really aren’t looking too good for you at all.
The quality, the cost and the breakdown for your daily intake goals just makes this completely not worth it at all. Seriously, just go get yourself some regular crumpets and some traditional high protein toppings and have something that is delicious and satisfying whilst meeting those goals. And! Even better buying a good topping, thanks to the money you would save on ‘regular’ crumpets especially if not even the branded ones, wouldn’t break the bank.
