Aldi’s Chicken En Croute

After getting this chicken en croute in an Aldi Too Good To Go I decided I simply had to give it a try and let you know my thoughts.

I got the honey and mustard one but I believe they do a couple of other variations including a bacon one. At full price they cost £3.69 so this alone exceeded the price of the bag but is it worth that price? Yes and no.

That price is for two portions as in here there are two small ones. I took the option to cook them both and put one in the fridge for lunch the following day. This does make it extremely affordable for two people and you certainly couldn’t get two chicken breasts, puff pastry and some other filling items for that price to make it fresh yourself.

This doesn’t taste a lot, or honestly at all, of mustard and it could really use that to counteract the noticeable sweetness of the chicken. If you love honey chicken then this might be down your aisle.

The pastry is pleasant. It’s flaky, a little bit buttery and doesn’t harden up on cooking. It provides for a nice addition without being an overbearing ratio vs the contents.

And there is a reasonable amount of chicken in there too which I was honestly surprised and impressed by. It tasted okay too. There are some chickens that taste reconstituted but it tasted like, and looked like, actual chicken.

I think the reason I wouldn’t gravitate towards picking something like this up again is if I’m going for a pastry thing I either want it fully encased like a chicken bake or if it’s in this style then with salmon in. But also for me personally it was just too sweet and it really could have done with more mustard to balance out that and provide a more complex flavour profile.

For me, right now at least, they aren’t the healthiest thing out there. The calories isn’t bad in them but they do include 61% of a recommended saturated fat intake and to have that amount in one swoop at my last meal of the day isn’t what I am looking for. However, they are very much still able to be had as part of a regular balanced diet where you’re not trying to be in any specific deficit. I’ve put the basic breakdown of calories and such below.

If I spotted these on discount or somebody offered me one I wouldn’t say no and part of me is curious about what the bacon one is like. These have a place on the table for sure just probably not my table.
