Terry’s Chocolate Orange Bar

Orange chocolate is delightful. No, I do not mean chocolate that has that sort of flavoured creme inside but I mean chocolate with orange oil and flavour directly running through it.

Why do I say this? When I was in the US I once mentioned chocolate oranges and one with the creme appeared at my desk. This was okay but it is most certainly not my definition of a chocolate orange; That right is reserved for Terry’s.

Since the creation of the original orange oil infused chocolate ball that you smash and whack to get the segments to break apart they have introduced different types of chocolate ones but also other flavours such as popping candy and mint ‘oranges’. They have not stopped with the spherical creations though and have expanded the range into ice cream, truffles and sharing bars.

They have a couple of different types of sharing bars but it is the one based on the original chocolate orange that I want to discuss here. Part of me is very torn about this product because it tastes just like the original and the segments look very similar too in terms of size and the little design on them but it doesn’t have that fun factor or that brain trickery of it looking like an orange.

Am I pleased to not have to undergo the battle of getting it to actually break, especially where it is too dense to do the monstrous thing of just chomping into it? Sort of. That little smash battle is part of the appeal of a chocolate orange; Knowing that everybody will know you are attempting to crack into it by the thud coming from your direction, it is certainly not a chocolate you can open on the downlow.

And not only are you losing out on that fun experience but you are also paying significantly more per gram for that privilege. Yes, if you are on the go or in a situation where you can’t tap and whack at one but really want to enjoy some orange chocolate then these do have a place (though Lindt orange is still the superior orange chocolate bar). Perhaps you happen to be baking and wanting to put a slice on top of some cupcake icing or to decorate a cheesecake but even then just spend the extra seconds smashing one up to get more bang for your buck.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this bar at all, especially if you like the flavour and texture of the actual oranges, but for the price and with it taking the fun factor away it just doesn’t feel completely worth it.
