Five Star Chef

First aired on Channel 4 and then taken to Netflix, this is six episodes of people competing to get a temporary spot in The Langham with their restaurant concept.

And that is my biggest complaint here, it would have been so much more beautiful to have it as five episodes. That without doubt seems ridiculous but it could have been that little bit more compact and just thematically it would have fitted that little bit more.

This is one of those shows that I kept watching but honestly I am not really sure why. Several of the competitors and their concepts were just things that I could not quite get behind and the rest just didn’t completely inspire me. The way the stories were presented again became common clichés when other elements of personalities and backgrounds could have been honed in on; At this point it feels like the easy way out and lazy creation to buy into the basic concepts rather than being creative or attempting to break the mould and do something different.

I will say that I was pleased with who the winner was, they were one of two people that I wanted to win. I wouldn’t call the concept of the winner super far out there, to me it is just a part of British culture and food that you can encounter a lot in most towns and cities, but for The Langham itself it goes a little bit more against the grain to make it ‘fancy’.

Realistically I probably wouldn’t actually recommend this show to somebody purely because it is so lacklustre and just does not quite do enough to really captivate or stand out from the many many other competition/cooking shows out there.
