Oh Weeble Wobbles. Hewwo. I love so many different colours but tend to go through phases with them. Ever seen my lala? Top to tail in a matching colour most of the time. My XIV house has everything in colour blocked sections. In real life I tend to do the same thing. There are certain colours or shades I just cannot abide being together as to me it doesn’t look right; For other people it works and there is no reason certain colours cannot go together but it brings me a bit of an anxious itch.
But more exciting than that recently there have been a few super big changes in my life and that has resulted in doing a little bit of interior design and we all know what that means? Choosing colours for different areas and figuring out what to put with what to break up the blocks because as much as I adore blocks in specific situations I want cohesiveness of several colours or shades going on.
Black and White
Specifically black and white together. Think penguins, pandas, zebras, orcas and more. All of those animals are amazing and there is something that I find incredibly relaxing about them; The only correlating factor? Them being black and white. Apart from dairy cows, they are violent, give me other cows but not a spotty dairy cow.
This colour combination just brings me a sense of calm with the crispness of a stark white and a really strong black. It does leave room for other colours to be added in as well but for me when you do that it becomes a little bit overwhelming to the eye; Even when somebody has to wear a suit for something like a wedding and they put a pop of colour into it with a tie or with a wedding guest flower it becomes a step too far. Just keep it neat and simple.
Grey
Alright yes this is probably one of the ‘fad’ colours at the minute but here me out with this because it is highly versatile. In my case yes I am going all in with making the kitchen grey (the kitchen came in grey and white so I’m rolling with it). And yes perhaps against what I said above I’m also going with things like a black kettle and toaster but that’s because long term one day my dream kitchen in a not rented property will be black and grey. But I mean an obvious shade of grey rather than a super blue hue leaning one or one that is almost black; There are nothing wrong with either of these but they don’t do it for me personally.
Pink
Not bright pink. Anything but Barbie pink (if you want to make me hurl then put me in front of a Barbie pink for a while, especially if it happens to be in a moving object form). Okay more than just Barbie pink but bright pinks in general are a no go for me. I will always remember going on a car journey once and we got stuck behind a bright pink car and no matter how hard I tried I couldn’t get it to escape my vision, combined with my mild ability to get car sickness anyway, it was not a happy ending.
Give me a muted pink, a pastel pink or a dirty pink and I am all ears and it works so well as either a block colour or mixed with other shades as well. This is another colour I intend to have in a room, probably the office/desk area, and to break it up will be going with grey. That is currently because the carpets of the place are grey (remember when I identified it being the current fad?). It can go with so many other colours as well though so it lending to that versatility will help down the road but pastel/light pinks will probably continue to have my heart for a long long time.
Blue
I remember at one point in time being super into midnight blue and dark blues but only in very specific situations. Generally those situations were for browsing through ‘fancy’ dresses as I’m very picky about what colours work with darker blues but also that as a shade range works well with a lot of different materials but I could only handle it as a dress. There is an office shirt I love wearing that is a dark blue but I really don’t like putting it with my dark/almost black jeans as it just doesn’t match up quite perfectly.
As I have got older though I have found myself appreciating all shades of blue a little bit more and being able to work them together. This includes, of course, lighter and pastel blues though mainly for wearing. A pastel blue is where I tend to block colour fluffy bed socks and cozy time clothes and a darker blue will creep into interiors. The current bedroom colour scheme is a darker blue with a mustard sort of yellow to break it up and give it some brightness too but this will eventually become the cozy zone colour combo (don’t ask what the cozy zone actually involves that is all a little undecided in my head right now). It doesn’t exactly work with the grey but I can live with it until the next stage of the dream down the road.
Green
I would call it mint choc chip green but a recent discovery has made me find out that a lot of Americans seem to view that to have a lot more of a darker undertone or lean towards a slightly more obvious blue hue and that simply isn’t what I mean so pastel green it is. Or on the other end of the scale a really dark emerald type of green, a plant green if you would, makes me wonderfully happy too. The bathroom is going dark green and white because it allows me to put a few carefully selected plants in there and darker coloured towels and linens I find stay looking good for longer too. If I was to wear green it would be more of a darker emerald green, whilst pastel green works well on Bhri it does nothing against Dannii complexion.
Purple
This is very much a last but not least moment. I love purple. Honestly, it is probably the colour I have gone with in various shades throughout my entire life. Growing up purple would be the gravitational force; Putting a dark shade on a feature wall against three pastel pink walls in my bedroom. Pastel purple with pink at another point (and going back to this fairly recently in just an upholstery way too). Darker purples suit my complexion better for clothing but I very rarely find myself actually daring to wear them for some reason. Down the road I fully intend to find a good purple that works with a dark shade of blue and combine them into a colour scheme for the bedroom but I fear I might end up being super picky about this and it could become a long term project to find things in the right shade. Oh and flowers. When they aren’t carnations, I love purple flowers.
So there we have it. What’s your favourite colour or two?
