I’ve half read it. I’ve half watched it. I have figures, a backpack and a little Lego-esque set of Anya’s room. There is a jigsaw puzzle awaiting a frame so I can put it together and have it on display. I’ve turned my FFXIV character into Anya and our family ‘cosplayed’ as the Forgers. I clearly have a thing for SpyX. So you better believe when the movie was coming along I was going to pout about going!
But that doesn’t mean I am automatically going to sing the praises of this movie. Everything is only as good as its last piece of work and so on but also if anything when you are a big fan of something it means your expectations and scrutiny levels are so much higher.
Code White is not bad at all. I really enjoyed watching it, the animation team continued to hit the style out of the park and the speed in which they went through the plot was good. You can easily watch it without having ever experienced any other piece of SpyxFamily works but with that it did have to cover some of the backstory to the setup of the characters and why certain things mattered and that was screen time that could have been better used elsewhere.
The plot focusses on Anya needing to do a school project for the chance to get a star towards her grades and those stars are essential to the hidden family mission to the East vs West saving the world style situation. But for her to make the testers favourite dessert it is decided she should be able to try one and Lloyd, acting Dad, decides for them to take a weekend trip to sample some. Of course not everything goes to plan and chaos ensues to get to sample and recreate the super delicious looking (of course, when doesn’t anime make food look great) sugary course.
It felt very “Westernized” even more so than the animated adaptations of Tatsuya Endo’s ongoing works because of them having to cover the backstory to give it a chance to bring in the additional crows that had heard all about this super loved massively successful show that hit the small screens/subscription sites. It’s from an piece of work created by Endo though so it really is still absolutely delightful and I sat in the chilly movie theatre (why do they always have to be so cold even with the heated seats) fully focused on it. Bond is still my favourite character and honestly probably will continue to be forever but Anya and her cuteness and pure childlike ways over some things will of course remain closely behind.
If you missed its theatre release then there is no need to worry as it is expected to be available to purchase at home in the near future or probably hitting subscription sites in some format for various tier payment levels too.
