Reese’s did it. 17 years later they brought back what is obviously a dream combination; Peanut butter, chocolate and caramel.
Let us take a moment here to acknowledge them ever taking it away was a bit of a silly move and they have been incredibly slow to bring it back, given the popularity of caramel products and that flavor combination for years.
Was it worth it? Yes. And I say that as somebody who has a peanut/legume allergy, though peanuts are actually the least reactive.
The texture balancing between the amount of chocolate, peanut butter and caramel sauce is practically perfect. I found that it was a little better overall in terms of textural integrity, or having a little added something, by putting it into the fridge for a little while to give the chocolate shell more of a contrast against everything else.
However, they are incredibly sweet. Though, as somebody that grew up in the UK and on British and European chocolate, this could just be a me thing as I do find a lot of American candy to tip the edge into overwhelming sweetness frequently.
For me the thing that would tip these from being practically perfect to actually perfect would be if it was a salted caramel to give that flavor profile balance or a darker chocolate shell. Either of these are again common combinations in the food world so it wouldn’t be a really out there flavor profile experiment or risk for them to consider. Perhaps in another 15-20 years they will get around to taking that leap!
They are currently available in a lot of ‘common’ grocery stores for between $1-$3 as either single cups or double packs.
If you give one a try I’d love to find out your thoughts!
